Commander Cody

The Cody paint job was a lot of fun. After 4 consecutive Rex lids, the break was nice!

I used spray cans for the base and acrylic paints for the weathering.

Rattle cans:

  • Rustoluem primer for plastics, white. This is used as the finish paint for the helmet. No topcoat was used.
  • Krylon grey primer. This was used for the rear detail.
  • Rustoleum line striping yellow for the fin / visor. These are inverted cans, so you have to spray it upside down. Awkward, but a good color.
  • Generic orange. A cheapo can of orange that I lightly misted over the yellow while it was still wet, just to give a bit more depth to the color.

Weathering:

  • Delta Ceramacoat Hippo Grey.
  • Delta Ceramacoat Black.
  • Windex

This follows the same formula I usually use for weathering. Make a wash out of a bunch of Windex and a tiny bit of black paint. Soak a paper towel in that mix and pat down the whole helmet. Use a clean towel and pat some of the wash off. Repeat until happy. Once that is dry (should only be a few minutes), daub on some of the grey with a paper towel, and then pat it with a clean one to gradually build up color in the areas you want.

I also scuffed up the paint in a few places with sandpaper, files, nails, etc... the small scuffs weren't visible on their own, but the grey paint filled them in, making them look really good.

I've since replaced this helmet twice, as the sculpts have been revised. The colors remain the same.
